Aqualuma Underwater Lighting, a leading Australian-based manufacturer of underwater LED lighting systems for the marine industry, has unveiled a new concept in personal watercraft (PWC) safety — the Aqualuma Brake Light System™ (ABS).

This affordable, patented accessory addresses an important industry-wide safety need and stands to benefit hundreds of thousands of boat owners in this immensely popular, youth-oriented category. PWCs are popular with the younger boating crowd because they are fast, highly manoeuvrable and exciting to ride. Much like motorcycles are on land, these ride-on or stand-on vessels are smaller and less visible than traditional boats, while they must share America’s crowded waterways with craft of all shapes and sizes.

Combine this reduced visibility with the high-speed, stop-and turn-on-a-dime nature in which PWCs are often operated, and the potential for accidents is greatly increased. The Aqualuma Brake Light System alerts other PWC riders and boaters when the operator releases the throttle for at least 1/2 second. Since these lightweight, jet-driven vessels stop almost immediately when the throttle is released — much like putting on a car’s brakes — it is important for other vessels to be aware.

The fact that larger powerboats take much longer to stop or change course makes increasing the visibility and awareness of PWCs even more critical. The Aqualuma Brake Light System offers another useful safety feature. When the throttle is released for a period of time, the unit automatically goes into a flash mode. This increases your visibility to surrounding boats anytime you’re stopped in the water. It can also alert other vessels if you need assistance due to mechanical problems by manually setting the “SOS” mode, which would be automatically cancelled if the engine were restored.

Because it uses low-energy-draw LED lights, the Aqualuma Brake Light System can flash for days without running down the vessel’s battery. This innovative system uses six long-lasting (insert colour) LED lights that can be seen from a distance, even in bright sunlight. These lights are contained in a rugged, waterproof polycarbonate housing that is built to withstand the rough-and-tumble life of a PWC. Compatible with all 2- and 4-stroke models from leading manufacturers, the Aqualuma Brake Light System easily mounts on the rear of any PWC and features self-calibrating, three-wire hookup.
